Understanding the treatment

What are wisdom teeth?

Wisdom tooth extraction is a common dental procedure when third molars cause problems as they emerge or because of their position. They usually appear between the ages of 17 and 25 at the back of the mouth, two in the upper jaw and two in the lower jaw.

Changes in human diet and smaller jaws mean there is often insufficient space for wisdom teeth to grow correctly. This can cause impaction, where the tooth cannot fully emerge through the gum, as well as misalignment, pain, infections or damage to neighbouring teeth.

Wisdom tooth extraction procedure

A dentist may recommend removing wisdom teeth following a careful assessment. The extraction method depends on the position of the teeth and the complexity of the case.

Simple extraction

If the tooth has partly emerged and is accessible, a simple extraction may be possible. After local anaesthetic is given, specialised instruments are used to remove it.

Surgical extraction

If a tooth is completely beneath the gum, surgery may be necessary. A small incision can provide access to the tooth, which may be divided into sections to make removal easier.

Anaesthesia

The choice of local anaesthesia or intravenous sedation is discussed before surgery according to the complexity of the extraction. Post-operative instructions support healing, covering pain relief, ice application, dental care and signs of infection to watch for.

Although wisdom tooth extraction is common and generally safe, following your dental professional’s recommendations is essential to prevent complications and support recovery. A consultation is needed to decide whether extraction is necessary and which method is appropriate.
