My journey
Your child’s treatment with nitrous oxide
Conscious sedation helps your child go through the treatment calmly. What to expect, and how to support them.

- D-7
Prepare
- Talk about the appointment simply: a “nice-smelling mask” to stay calm while the dentist fixes the tooth.
- Read our article “Conscious sedation, explained to parents” in the guides.
- Mention a cold, a cough or any ongoing treatment: nitrous oxide needs a clear nose.
- D-day
The treatment
- A light meal two hours before, not later.
- A comfort toy or music in the ears are welcome.
- After the treatment, a short quiet time at the practice: the gas wears off within minutes.
- D+1
The next day
- Normal food, avoiding sticky things if a tooth was treated.
- Praise your child: a positive experience is the best preparation for next time.
- D+7
Afterwards
- Brushing twice a day with age-appropriate toothpaste, supervised until age eight.
- The next check-up is due in six months.
